MGLC Mission Statement
The MGLC is here to provide a safe and friendly environment, both locally and nationally for Malaysian gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders. We are a non-profit and non-political social support organization. We do not discriminate against race and gender. We welcome people from all cultural backgrounds. We are here to provide assistance for our members in seeking gay-related resources about Malaysia as well as in the United States of America.
Where
We are headquatered in San Francisco with many of the members
living in the Bay Area. However, the membership includes people from
around California, the USA and Worldwide.
When
The MGLC was conceived in January of 1995 and became official at our general meeting on March 25, 1995. In the words of Thomas Cheng,
"The idea began as a thought, to observe how other gay and lesbian Malaysians were faring here in the United States and in Malaysia. Recently, I went home to visit Malaysia after an absence of eight years. The visit revealed the advantage I have living in San Francisco, out and gay. I then decided to find other Malaysian gay and lebians. Several months later in that search, the MGLC was formed.
"Who would have imagined that there were so many gay and lesbian Malaysians given the fact that Malaysia is a small, conservative and restrictive Muslim country. Ever since I met other Malaysians, we agreed that initially there weren't many other Malaysians other than ourselves who were openly gay or lesbian around. As our group grows, things are beginning to look very different.
"I have had wonderful support from the San Francisco gay community and organizations. With their help MGLC is reaching many Malaysian gays and lesbians everywhere and uniting them with us. It is truly a feeling of belonging and connecting with our own kind, not only being Malaysian but being homosexual too.
"It is our proud moment to be able to have our own small but significant voice heard. We will do the gays and lesbians of the world justice by providing a support network for each other as gays and lesbians. Thank you and it is great to be a part of a growing community. " Early summer 1995
Our Meetings
We meet on the first Saturday of the even numbered months for a social potluck with members and friends. We also meet for special events. All of our meetings are listed on the Events page. We are here to serve as a support group, source and guide for our members.
The MGLC Logo
The Malaysian Gay and Lesbian Club Logo is a unique representation of the Malaysian National Origin by using the Malaysian National Flower, the Bunga Raya. Bunga Raya means Festive Flower. In English, it is known as Hibiscus. The significance of the stigma going through the Bunga Raya shows the emergence of a new group. The Bunga Raya is a beautiful flower that comes in many vibrant colors just like the many different races that live in harmony in Malaysia.
The Logo and Web Graphics are designed by our own K.C.
